Looking Back with Gratitude, Forward with Hope
Last Sunday was a special time to celebrate and thank Christa for her incredible 5+ years of service to FPC and to send her off with our love, prayers, and best wishes. But as always, God works in amazing ways! What began as a day of “Goodbye” turned into a joyful reunion as we welcomed back familiar faces and dear friends, including Pastor Glen and Pastor Kirk.
Pastor Kirk, who faithfully served as FPC’s lead pastor for over 30 years, made his first visit since his retirement 2 ½ years ago. The day became a beautiful reminder of God’s continued work here at FPC—through our vibrant worship, and the connections we share as a church family. A warm reunion of pastors was just one of many blessings of the day, and these words Pastor Kirk shared with us were another:
“I was so proud of all of you this morning! I felt such thanksgiving to God for what He is obviously doing currently at FPC!
It felt so great to see the place humming again and looking so vital and alive!! And obviously on an upward trajectory. The Sanctuary was full and there were chairs in the Narthex!!
After spending the last nearly 3 years visiting literally dozens of mainline Protestant churches around Madison and Dane County and finding mostly gray hair, empty pews, no children, listless preaching, no young families, only one or two little kids coming up for a “children’s time”, it was a joy to attend worship at FPC! And especially to hear such an outstanding sermon.
I felt like I was watching the post-Covid rebirth of a church before my very eyes. And I was thanking God that the PNC obviously found such a dynamic and gifted young pastor to help feed and lead the flock!
This was a worship service today unlike anything I have attended in nearly 3 years. Pastor Will, thank you for inviting me back. I was blessed to be there today. My faith was strengthened and my heart was lifted in thanksgiving to Jesus!”
-Kirk
As we look ahead to 2025, we are excited to see all that God has in store for us. May you have a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year, FPC!
Peace,
Lori Phelps
Interim Director of Children’s Ministry
Video Devotional: All Things Are Possible with God – the G.I.A.T. Church Movement in Indonesia
Mark 10:27 tells us that “all things are possible with God.” Sivan Simarmora and the G.I.A.T.Church movement in Indonesia, with 105 churches on its way to 1,000 churches, is a clear example of God’s doing what is impossible for humankind. Hear this unique story in this episode of Scriptures for Life.
Soli Deo Gloria!
We exist as a congregation to know Jesus Christ and to make Him known:
- To proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ so all may come to know and love Him;
- To nurture His people in joyful faith, fellowship, and commitment; and
- To demonstrate His way of love in service to the world.
We use the Connector to share news of the coming week and beyond, the activities that involve a wide range of ages and interests at FPC.

If you’re a caregiver (current or previous), consider attending a meeting. The meetings are drop-in style. Newcomers are always welcome. You can choose to share or just listen. Meetings are in the Chapel, once on the second Monday of the month at 6:30pm, and once on the second Saturday of the month at 10:00am. If one of these times do not work for you, please let us know. To learn more, contact Marcia Chase, marchase@icloud.com or call/text at cell # (334) 444-6610and leave a message during work hours. Or just drop in to a meeting.

Opportunities to Serve
Beanie Babies serving in the name of Christ?
Below you will find a list of items that need to be collected to help make the January Guatemala trip successful. You may ask, “Why stuffed animals?” or simply think it’s a nice gift for needy children, but really it is so much more than that. One of Outreach for World Hope’s most impactful missions is to identify and help starving children. Each child who comes to the distribution center is promised a stuffed animal or toy. Having an abundance of stuffed animals helps to ensure the children come and Outreach for World Hope can identify those most at risk of starvation and intervene before it’s too late.
Needed items:
• New or gently used children’s clothing size 2T & up
• Jeans/pants preferred over shorts
• Lightweight children’s shoes
• Infant clothing/hats
• Baby receiving blankets
• Small toys
• Small stuffed animals (size of beanie babies)
• Dum Dum suckers
• Acetaminophen/tylenol 325mg
• Ibuprofen
• Generic tums
• Fiberfill/scrap matting
Please place all donation items in the suitcases by the mission table by January 5th.

News and Announcements
2025 Offering Envelopes
If you requested a box of 2025 offering envelopes, they are available to be picked up on a table near the Christmas tree in the lobby. If you would like a box of offering envelopes and don’t see one there for you, please fill out one of the blue forms on that table and place it in either the pledge or offering box, and Kristina will prepare a box for you. You may also send an email to Kristina Maher, Church Business Administrator, at kmaher@myfpc.org to request a box.
Share the Joy!
FPC’s tradition of a live Nativity has long been called our “Christmas card to the community.” This year, we’d like to share some Christmas cards with our congregation! If you are planning on sending Christmas cards this year, please bring one in for your church family. There is a display wall in the narthex, where you can hang it up for all to enjoy. As an alternative to greeting cards, if you put yourselves through the time-honored tradition of a family photo (aka “herding cats”), we would love to share that too!! We are looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces on our Christmas card display!!
Who doesn’t like a win-win situation?
That’s what occurs when you donate long-term appreciated stock, mutual funds, or bonds to a nonprofit such as First Presbyterian Church of Waunakee!
You can potentially eliminate paying capital gains tax AND deduct the full fair market value from your taxes if you itemize your deductions. What this means is your donation dollars go farther (the amount that would have gone to the IRS if you had sold the investment are now going to the church) and help FPC carry out God’s work through our ministry areas.
Please check with a professional tax advisor to determine what is best for your personal situation.
FPC has opened a new account through Thrivent in order to accept stock donations. Please contact our Church Business Administrator, Kristina Maher, at 608-949-9453 or kmaher@myfpc.org for directions on how to transfer stock to the church. Please notify the Church Business Administrator if a stock gift is coming our way and what you’d like it to be put towards (i.e. your pledge, Endowment Fund, parking lot loan, etc.).

Praise Song of the Week
This week we will be highlighting two praise songs, both of which will be sung this coming Sunday. Even So Come by Chris Tomlin is yearning for Jesus’ calling to come and save the lost. When listening it would be easy to assume that it is a Lenten song, but we can just as easily sing it during Advent. Because of Jesus’ birth, all of the song’s proclamations are true. Because of His birth, we are offered a rebirth and the opportunity to recognize His coming again. Build Your Kingdom Here by Rend Collective is filled with expressions from Jesus’ teaching and parables about the kingdom of God. It is an acclamation welcoming Jesus into our hearts and the rest of humanity.
Stephen Ministry at FPC: Providing God’s Care to Hurting People
What is this ministry about?
Extensively trained and supervised Stephen Minister Caregivers provide high-quality, one-on-one confidential Christian care to anyone in need. They provide weekly visits and ongoing support as long as the care receiver needs. Should the care receiver have needs that are beyond the scope of a Stephen Minister Caregiver, they are referred to professional caregivers.
What kind of care is offered from a Stephen Minister?
- CRISIS CARE – For people experiencing change(s) that significantly challenge their ability to cope.
- FOLLOW-UP CARE – After the crisis event.
- CHRONIC CARE – For a person whose situation is unlikely to change.
- PREVENTIVE CARE – Providing care before a crisis occurs.
- SUPPORTIVE CARE – Care for the caregiver.
How can I find out more about this ministry?
Call the church office at 608-949-9445, or reach out to a pastor or deacon. Stephen Minister Caregivers don’t replace the care of pastors and deacons. They carry it a step further.
